¾ cup chana dal, rinsed

2 cups water or low sodium vegetable broth or inventory    

¼ tsp turmeric powder

¼ tsp cayenne pepper

½ tsp garam masala

1 tbsp oil

2 garlic cloves, minced

2 dried purple chilies, reduce into items

½ tsp cumin seeds

¼ tsp mustard seeds

1 tbsp chopped cilantro or parsley

salt to style
